Context:

Weltwehmut is a series of drawings about human melancholy and absudity in relation to memory and historical traumas from 20th century based in found photographic images. Over the past years, Lippe Muniz has used a vast personal collection of images as templates for his drawings that combine figures with new elements as objects, strange black shadows and textual fragments that introduce subjective experience into fragmentary narrative scenographies. Most of the images used as motive by Lippe Muniz are images found in history books and old photografic family albuns. Impressions of absurdity, loneliness, sadness, opression, and death appears constantly in the series. His drawings are surreal and violent interpretations of human existence, reality and history.

Bühne für Kohle, Stöcke und Schweigen. (Stage for Coals, Canes and Silence)

Bühne für Kohle, Stöcke und Schweigen - Stage for Coals, Canes and Silence, 2010
Coal, book, cane, photos, tools and watering can.
Installation on Kunsthof Galerie, Jena.

Context:

After finding an old photo from a wedding held in the year of 1944 in the region of Thuringia in Germany Lippe Muniz decided to create in a gallery of the region the installation Bühne für Kohle, Stock und Schweigen. Using only materials obtained in Thuringia Lippe created an environment where each element has a dramatic and symbolic meaning. Canes are tied into each other alert us that something is lame, that something is sick and need a repair. Coal (so important for Germany) is a metaphor for the disasters of war and the ruin of the modernist project (the construction of a new world aesthetic, functional and rational idealized by Bauhaus). The iron tools hanging on the wall allude to the practice of torture occurred in a concentration camp near the region. The watering can facing the concrete wall in an insane action to make it alive. The photographs of couples and the history book of war are like reminiscences of the war nightmare. However, the old photographic image of a marriage on the wall brings us the reminder that love and hope can exist even in the most tragic and bestial moments.

Delikat

Delikat, 2010
Cigarrettes, sweets, box and lither.
Duration: About 4 hours
Espaço Gomo, Rio de Janeiro.

Performance realizada no espaço Gomo em maio de 2010.

Context:

An elegantly dressed young man kneels in front of a wall and an unexpected gray box. In an unexpected gesture he takes off from his pockets cigarettes and sweets. Isolated, he smokes relentlessly. For each cigarette smoked a new delicacy is withdrawn from the pocket, ate, and swallowed or spit. The ashes are left inside the box, whereas the goodies are piled next to the floor. Absorbed in his continuous and incoherent action the man experiences the nicotine and the solitude, the pleasure of smoking and its addictive. From a simple and symbolic act comes the poetic moment of the work, the tension between pleasure and death, introspection and isolation. After the action of the remaining debris, ashes, cigarette butts, sweet and box, become an object. A multiple.
